He was plenty warm for a Wisconsin Halloween, had a blast and received endless compliments. This section is all about dragons and if we know one thing about dragons, they love fire! There are plenty of dragon stories throughout literature. There’s the classic image of a large scaly lizard, sleeping with one eye open on top of a pile of stolen gold.

These Halloween costumes were so much fun to make and wear. Fold the craft foam over the wire and secure with duct tape. Cut a piece of craft foam to a square slightly larger than 1 half of the wire hanger. We spent about 16 hours total with cutting and painting and playing with several ideas. Paint, stick-on felt and a black sweat suit were the majority of the cost.

For a 6 year old, Max is a tough client to please. Thank goodness Halloween finally arrived or by now it would be sequined with a built in fire blowing attachment. We did intend to make clawed feet and hands and felt-scaled legs but ran out of time.

The craft foam is lightweight and flexible and the duct tape adds strength where needed. To make the “horns” we used black material and stuffed them with batting and attached to the top of the dragon’s head. The tail is also cardboard painted and we attached it to a belt to hold it on.

To make dragon wings,bend a wire hanger into a diamond shape, cut in the middle, unwind the 2 pieces. Cut an oversized piece of craft foam for the nose and glue on. Clip with clothes pins and allow glue to dry overnight. Trim the nose piece to the desired shape.

Attach the dragon ears to the backside of the mask with metal brads . It was only the week before Halloween when my husband and I came up with the idea to be a dragon and a wizard. His wizard costume was easy to make and my dragon costume was SO MUCH FUN to make. The dragon’s head is all from cardboard pieces cut and heavily taped together. To create the “fire” we used tissue paper taped inside the mouth. Is there anything scarier than a dragon with three heads?
The base is a black turtleneck and jogging pant and aviator hat. The red and white areas are felt and the black wings, tail and fat body are stretchy polar fleece. The head piece was stuffed and sewn to a child’s winter aviator hat.

Flatten the bottom ends of the horns and staple onto the mask. Pull the spiral tight and attach with metal brads. Use a pin to poke a hole for the metal brads to easily slip into.
Cover the wing with tulle and secure with another strip of duct tape around two edges. Trace your wing shape onto more craft foam. Cut the boning and glue onto the wing. With the 2 other pieces, cut boning for the ears.
The tube should take on a slight curve.
The dragon’s feet are cardboard pieces with holes to tie onto shoelaces. We used a black sweatshirt and attached purple stick-on felt to create the belly of the dragon. We also attached fabric cut with jagged edges with safety pins to create the dragon’s wings. Cut 4 pieces for the dragon “ears” leaving extra foam on 2 pieces to attach to the backside of the mask. For a scale effect, hold a piece of tulle over the craft foam and lightly paint with a foam brush. This dragon costume is mostly made up of craft foam and duct tape.
