Movie Review: "Annabelle Comes Home" is a mildly entertaining entry in "The Conjuring" universe News Events Opinion More

Jake is no more interesting a character than he was last time around, but he does have utility here as a tough father figure for his kids to struggle to live up to. Zoe Saldaña’s Neytiri feels like the legacy character with the least to do, mostly advocating for her kids to a distracted Jake. The leaders of the Metkayina tribe, played by Cliff Curtis and Kate Winslet, are cut from a very similar cloth to Jake and Neytiri and often end up feeling redundant as a result.

While babysitting Judy Warren, Mary Ellen and her friend unwittingly release the Annabelle doll from its confines in the Warren's artifact room, along with several other cursed objects, which then proceed to attack the girls. Despite the title, the film isn't really about Annabelle; as she's only one of several cursed objects that have to be overcome. Still, the writers come up with some rather creative and frightening demonic spirits. Yet it holds back on the blood and violence, not really earning its R rating.

In this case, it’s the babysitter’s friend Daniela , who has her reasons for wanting to contact the world beyond. There goes protection from all sorts of hellish miscellany that wants to eat your soul. While previous Annabelle movies have stumbled over complicated, murky plots about a demonic entity whose motivations are mostly unclear—aside from its unending quest to collect human souls—Annabelle Comes Home is simple. The house itself is haunted because it's full of haunted stuff, intentionally placed there by adults who investigate hauntings.

One bad film and one good film, which brings us to the third film in the series, Annabelle Comes Home. Directed by Gary Dauberman, in his directorial debut, with a story by Dauberman and James Wan. It is the seventh entry in the Conjuring Universe and stars Mckenna Grace, Madison Iseman, and Katie Sarife. Both Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson also show up to reprise their roles as Lorraine and Ed Warren.

Furthermore, there’s a tenderness here that we don’t see a lot of in movies of this nature. Case in point, a cute little crush between Mary and Bob that doesn’t end in the prerequisite booty call you might be expecting. It’s refreshing to see puppy love displayed in such a tender and sweet-natured way. If you’re already thinking that this sounds like overkill, you are right.

Adding to the aforementioned likability factor are the performances. Farmiga and Wilson only have glorified cameos here but they bring their typical sense of warmth to the table in a very short amount of screen time. This young girl is not only dealing with a potential gift handed down from her mother but she also has the added pressure of being that classmate with the weird parents. Iseman is charming, and her natural screen presence goes a long way to keep Mary from being a one-note babysitter. As a teen dealing with loss, an emotional Daniela desperately wants to believe there’s something out there, and through her intense ordeal with Mary and Judy, she may just get an answer.

Annabelle Comes Home Reviews

Oddly enough, perhaps what works best in this film is the likability factor. Again, there’s an innocence here that’s most welcome and unexpected. Unlike a lot of contemporary horror films, “Annabelle Comes Home” doesn’t rely upon relentless gore and shock tactics to prove its worth. In fact, I’ve seen PG-13 rated horror movies that were more extreme.

movie review annabelle comes home

If only the half-baked story could also meet our expectations, or at least match the logic of the previous two “Annabelle” films. Annabelle Comes Home is gifted with what might be the ultimate haunted house set-up. Chuck in the well-worn ‘baby babysitter’ trope, and Annabelle Comes Home should be a Friday night funhouse blast. It wasn’t particularly scary, and there wasn’t anything particularly memorable about the characters.

Regular Conjuringverse visitors know that the antique doll resides deep in the Warrens’ basement, a virtual museum of cursed totems and creepy-as-fuck playthings. Casual moviegoers can guess that someone will eventually go down into that basement, ignore the sign that demands no one open the case under any circumstances and rile up the bad-juju inventory. So when the Warrens go out of town for a job and leave their daughter Judy under the care of a teenage neighbor named Mary Ellen , it’s only a matter of time before some curious underage character messes with things they shouldn’t.

Synchronized content is presented on the same screen while the movie is playing, thus enabling users to quickly learn more about any scene, such as actor biographies, scene locations, fun trivia, or image galleries. Also, users can share movie clips with friends on social media and experience other immersive content. The Movies All Access app is available for download on the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store. When she learns what the Warrens do for a living, she weasels her way into the house under the guise of helping Judy celebrate her birthday, but she has other plans. She makes her way into the locked room and, as the trailer emphasizes, touches everything — including Annabelle.

Well-done scares are paired with tension-breaking levity, and we even see a few new monsters (and/or sequel fodder). Annabelle Comes Home should serve as a not-so-serious summer horror flick for anyone looking to laugh a little and jump a lot. Though we spend some brief time in the forests of the first film, the vast majority of The Way of Water takes place in the territory of the seafaring Metkayina tribe, and the vibrant underwater ecosystem is an even more dreamlike palette for Cameron to work with. But when the time comes to blow up all that tranquility in favor of blockbuster action, it should come as little surprise that Cameron delivers the goods. Even the most chaotic action sequences are readable, thrillingly paced, and above all, impossible to take your eye away from.

In this installment by debut director Gary Dauberman , we pick up exactly where the opening scene of “The Conjuring” left off. A totally normal kid considering the circumstances—who amongst us would have turned out okay if we were raised in a haunted house by demonologist parents constantly making the headlines? —Judy gets bullied in school all the same, having trouble even recruiting enough friends to come to her birthday celebration. Check out the teaser trailer for The Little Mermaid, the upcoming live-action reimagining of the animated musical classic. The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric.

Horror Movie Review: Annabelle Comes Home 2019 GAMES, BRRRAAAINS & A HEAD-BANGING LIFE

The script also wisely leans more toward detailing the characters rather than the jump scares galore festival previous entries in the cinematic universe have been . These characters are easy to care about and root for, finding themselves in a haunted house full of possessed artifacts, conduits, violent brides, werewolves, mirrors that play head games, nods to previous movies, and anything else that can be thrown in there for good measure. Particularly, the film is strong at using eye-catching cinematography so the audience lets their guard down before something makes its ugly presence known. I realize this context reads a bit like homework as most “something-something universe” summaries often do. Nevertheless, it is an important set up for the latest and only sufficiently creepy franchise spinoff “Annabelle Comes Home,” which takes that same genie out of the bottle some years after the nurses got rid of it.

In this case, it’s the babysitter’s friend Daniela , who has her reasons for wanting to contact the world beyond. There goes protection from all sorts of hellish miscellany that wants to eat your soul. movie review annabelle comes home

Annabelle Comes Home is one of the weaker entries in the series, but it still delivers some good scares. A worthy addition to the "Conjuring" universe, this is the best of the three "Annabelle" movies because it's an old school horror film modest in scope, yet high on scares and fun. Along with his cinematographer Michael Burgess, Dauberman swiftly utilizes every nook and cranny of the Warren house for maximum spookiness—predictably, the well-choreographed scenes in the artifact room are the film’s strongest. You would think that Annabelle Comes Home, the seventh film in The Conjuring universe and the third Annabelle film, is doomed to fail.

James Gunn Debunks Report About The Batman Joining the DCU

Daniela is also quite touching, hoping to communicate with her dead father while blaming herself for his death; she's more than just a busybody poking around where she shouldn't be. And it's a welcome surprise to see Farmiga and Wilson back as the Warrens. All in all, everything clicks satisfyingly into place for a solid scarefest that's worth getting dolled up for.

Thanks in no small part to a shift in focus to the next generation, The Way of Water has far more room for levity than its self-serious forerunner. Jake and Neytiri’s kids bicker and tease, they get into scraps with their new tribemates, but above all, they stick together. Cameron invests a lot into middle kids Lo’ak and Kiri as the new representatives of the Na’vi’s warrior and spiritual leanings, with each struggling to understand their place. Spider, the Sullys’ adopted human child, doesn’t get quite as much time with his siblings because of how the story progresses, but his mix of feral energy and wisecracking attitude help him stand out. The eldest and youngest Sully children have little to do and get lost in the shuffle, apart from when someone needs to be endangered to keep the plot moving. The Way of Water is in no rush to expand the franchise’s universe and, after a decade plus of seeing the pros and cons of interconnected storytelling, that serves the experience well.

Movie Review: “Annabelle Comes Home” is a mildly entertaining entry in “The Conjuring” universe

The myriad entities allow for each character to have their moment while simultaneously setting up possible sequels, a la The Nun, The Curse of La Llorona, and the forthcoming The Crooked Man. For this reason, Annabelle is the most dangerous thing in the Warrens' collection. Because attempting to destroy the doll will only make everything worse, the Warrens seal her in a consecrated glass box with a sign instructing anyone who somehow gets into their room of cursed objects to never, ever let her out. Lacking the style and scares of the better Conjuring movies, Annabelle Comes Home plays its tantalising spookhouse concept a little slow and far too straight.

movie review annabelle comes home

The characters can't just run away screaming for multiple reasons, but they're also not entirely uninformed about the paranormal. While the entire plot is predicated on one person doing something really stupid, the film explains her motivations. The Digital version’s special features will include interviews with filmmakers, new original shorts, featurettes, and deleted scenes and fans can experience them in an entirely new, dynamic and immersive manner on tablets and mobile phones using the Warner Bros. When a Combo Pack is purchased and the digital movie is redeemed, or the digital movie is purchased from an UltraViolet retailer, the Warner Bros.

The religious rite seems to immobilize Annabelle for about a year, before an uninvited visitor disrupts the enforced calm of the artifacts room. Things start to go sideways on the evening that the Warrens’ 10-year-old daughter Judy plans to celebrate her birthday early with teen babysitter Mary Ellen while her parents are out of town on a case. “Annabelle Comes Home” is a slight step up thanks to its better realized place within the franchise and closer connection to the two main Conjuring films.

movie review annabelle comes home

However, her curiosity once inside, takes over and she ends up touching and interacting with several of the artefacts as well as opening the case that houses the Annabelle doll. Like JUMANJI but instead of monkeys and spiders coming out of the woodwork, it's ancient evils from lore bent of causing as much pain and suffering as humanly possible, the demons that have infested the Warrens' artifact room come barreling out once Annabelle is unleashed. From the moment the sun goes down the final half is a whirlwind of clever and sometimes intense scares that make use of all sorts of props and characters. It’s a carnival of blood, haunting ghouls, deceptively vicious items and even a werewolf. Yes, this entry finally delivers on one nasty beastie with sharp claws that chases one dump boy around the outside of the house. Dauberman orchestrates a dramatic array of supernatural entities to frighten the girls, with the bloody bride perhaps the most threatening, other than the silently menacing Annabelle.

Annabelle Comes Home is over the top and not in an entertaining way. Instead, what we have here are set-piece after set-piece as each evil spirit gets its moment to shine and rarely does it result in anything effective. If you’re hoping for something scary here, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. Especially if you’ve seen any of these films before as there is nothing original at all to be found.

Instead of trying to out-creep The Conjuring, it pivots into a lighter, simpler, funnier film with a tighter plot and a few fresh monsters . If Annabelle Comes Home should be the last Annabelle-centric film in the series, it feels like a perfect final chapter. Comparing it the it's predecessors Annabelle comes home it's the weakest installment from the conjuring universe.the way in which the plot of the film is developed feels a bit rushed and forced. It is a horror thriller that leaves you wanting more and does not meet the expectations of the previous films. However uninspired early moments of the movie were they’re replaced by inventive, rapid-fire set pieces that get the most out of the kind of lore that makes this series so terrifying. You have the evil Ferry Man, who lures Mary Ellen throughout the house with rolling coins on the ground, as well as the suit of samurai armor, which houses the bloody events of the person who last wore it.

While Annabelle Comes Home does quite have the same patience, it makes up for it in pure moments of terror. This movie is terrifying from beginning to end and has little reprieve. Yet, it’s still a step-down and a great example of why we need to move away from franchises. By being part of a cinematic universe, Annabelle Comes Home allows itself to be formulaic. That formula works but requires additional unique elements to keep it afloat. This movie comes close to having those elements but doesn’t quite get there.

Annabelle Comes Home Movie Review: Hello, Evil-Hellspawn Dolly!

At a bladder-busting 190 minutes, The Way of Water almost always finds the time to circle back to reinforce the most crucial plot elements, but it does mean that there will be times where you’ll be searching for a character’s name or their place in the social hierarchy. Cameron’s betting that you’ll be too bowled over by what a decade of technological advancement has done for realizing Pandora on screen, and the results speak for themselves. The Warrens lock Annabelle in a room that is filled with haunted and cursed items ranging from a suit of Samurai armor to a wedding dress to a pile of gold coins. While the Warrens are away, their daughter Judy is put in the care of high schooler Mary Ellen , who, unlike most babysitters in movies, is actually pretty great.

Language includes a use of "f--k" and a few uses of "s--t" and "balls." Teens flirt a bit, and a teen boy tries for a kiss but is thwarted. Still, “Annabelle Comes Home” isn’t entirely without its guilty pleasures. “The Conjuring” universe has always sported top-notch period costuming, and the latest chapter follows suit with Leah Butler’s skillful designs that tiptoe around the transitional looks of the early ‘70s. Dauberman also does right by the wacky humor of the franchise, which he delivers through a character named Bob, so adorably smitten with Mary Ellen that he pledges to survive his own little corner of horrors. Eventually, Dauberman hits an unexpectedly sweet note with the accumulation of various female coming-of-age stories.

Jaws 3-D ( Revisited – Horror Movie Review

Daniela is also quite touching, hoping to communicate with her dead father while blaming herself for his death; she's more than just a busybody poking around where she shouldn't be. And it's a welcome surprise to see Farmiga and Wilson back as the Warrens. All in all, everything clicks satisfyingly into place for a solid scarefest that's worth getting dolled up for.

Top 10 Movies

But “Annabelle Comes Home” proves it’s perhaps time to put the genie back in its bottle and bring this particular creepy doll series to a decisive close. Annabelle Comes Home takes the classic horror trope of Teenage Babysitters in Predicaments, and ups the ante by placing them in Ed and Lorraine Warrens’ house full of haunted objects. These familiar elements culminate in a fun, refreshing, even heart-warming entry into the Conjuring franchise.

While the filmmaking displayed on a technical level allows the film to achieve heightened production values, this one can't help but play exclusively in the realm of cheap thrills. An old-fashioned film that doesn't rely on gore to sell the thrills. Instead there's lots of laboured breathing, wide eyed disbelief, low-fi drive-in thrills and characters you want to survive. Film Credits

Later, while trying to cheer Judy up and prepare for her upcoming birthday, a friend of Mary Ellen named Daniela arrives. She pretends as though she wants to hang out but is actually more interested in the Warren’s haunted artefact room. Having lost her father in a car crash recently, she is hoping to contact him.

The franchise has been losing steam as of late, especially after two of the worse entries in the unlikely horror franchise — The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona, which is already a film that doesn’t exist. However, with The Conjuring stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprising their roles as demonologists Ed and Lorraine, Annabelle Comes Home finds itself by leaning on what made the original film so good in the first place. As directed by Gary Dauberman, “Annabelle Comes Home” takes a while to get going. But once it hits its stride, it’s a moderately entertaining ride, particularly, in the final 30 minutes when the picture transforms into an extended funhouse attraction.

As in previous Conjuring films, the best scares are the subtle ones that build in layers of increasing dread, while the CGI terrors are bigger, but not necessarily better. My favorite scare is a seemingly innocent object that you realize is going to be bad news later on and when it pays off, you’re not sure if you should laugh or hide. This clear-cut plotting is welcome in a franchise where I'm still wondering why anyone thought this doll was a totally normal thing to make or own in the first place. And remember how in Cabin in the Woods, the basement was also full of haunted things just waiting to be activated? Thanks to Annabelle's beacon status, this film is like that if the characters had managed to activate all of them at once.
