Jake is no more interesting a character than he was last time around, but he does have utility here as a tough father figure for his kids to struggle to live up to. Zoe Saldaña’s Neytiri feels like the legacy character with the least to do, mostly advocating for her kids to a distracted Jake. The leaders of the Metkayina tribe, played by Cliff Curtis and Kate Winslet, are cut from a very similar cloth to Jake and Neytiri and often end up feeling redundant as a result.

This young girl is not only dealing with a potential gift handed down from her mother but she also has the added pressure of being that classmate with the weird parents. Iseman is charming, and her natural screen presence goes a long way to keep Mary from being a one-note babysitter. As a teen dealing with loss, an emotional Daniela desperately wants to believe there’s something out there, and through her intense ordeal with Mary and Judy, she may just get an answer.

Annabelle Comes Home Reviews

Oddly enough, perhaps what works best in this film is the likability factor. Again, there’s an innocence here that’s most welcome and unexpected. Unlike a lot of contemporary horror films, “Annabelle Comes Home” doesn’t rely upon relentless gore and shock tactics to prove its worth. In fact, I’ve seen PG-13 rated horror movies that were more extreme.

If only the half-baked story could also meet our expectations, or at least match the logic of the previous two “Annabelle” films. Annabelle Comes Home is gifted with what might be the ultimate haunted house set-up. Chuck in the well-worn ‘baby babysitter’ trope, and Annabelle Comes Home should be a Friday night funhouse blast. It wasn’t particularly scary, and there wasn’t anything particularly memorable about the characters.

Regular Conjuringverse visitors know that the antique doll resides deep in the Warrens’ basement, a virtual museum of cursed totems and creepy-as-fuck playthings. Casual moviegoers can guess that someone will eventually go down into that basement, ignore the sign that demands no one open the case under any circumstances and rile up the bad-juju inventory. So when the Warrens go out of town for a job and leave their daughter Judy under the care of a teenage neighbor named Mary Ellen , it’s only a matter of time before some curious underage character messes with things they shouldn’t.

Iseman is charming, and her natural screen presence goes a long way to keep Mary from being a one-note babysitter. As a teen dealing with loss, an emotional Daniela desperately wants to believe there’s something out there, and through her intense ordeal with Mary and Judy, she may just get an answer.

Annabelle Comes Home is one of the weaker entries in the series, but it still delivers some good scares. A worthy addition to the "Conjuring" universe, this is the best of the three "Annabelle" movies because it's an old school horror film modest in scope, yet high on scares and fun. It’s a carnival of blood, haunting ghouls, deceptively vicious items and even a werewolf. Yes, this entry finally delivers on one nasty beastie with sharp claws that chases one dump boy around the outside of the house. Dauberman orchestrates a dramatic array of supernatural entities to frighten the girls, with the bloody bride perhaps the most threatening, other than the silently menacing Annabelle.

Annabelle Comes Home is over the top and not in an entertaining way. Instead, what we have here are set-piece after set-piece as each evil spirit gets its moment to shine and rarely does it result in anything effective. If you’re hoping for something scary here, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. Especially if you’ve seen any of these films before as there is nothing original at all to be found.

While Annabelle Comes Home does quite have the same patience, it makes up for it in pure moments of terror. This movie is terrifying from beginning to end and has little reprieve. Yet, it’s still a step-down and a great example of why we need to move away from franchises. By being part of a cinematic universe, Annabelle Comes Home allows itself to be formulaic. That formula works but requires additional unique elements to keep it afloat. This movie comes close to having those elements but doesn’t quite get there.

At a bladder-busting 190 minutes, The Way of Water almost always finds the time to circle back to reinforce the most crucial plot elements, but it does mean that there will be times where you’ll be searching for a character’s name or their place in the social hierarchy. Cameron’s betting that you’ll be too bowled over by what a decade of technological advancement has done for realizing Pandora on screen, and the results speak for themselves. Still, “Annabelle Comes Home” isn’t entirely without its guilty pleasures. “The Conjuring” universe has always sported top-notch period costuming, and the latest chapter follows suit with Leah Butler’s skillful designs that tiptoe around the transitional looks of the early ‘70s. Dauberman also does right by the wacky humor of the franchise, which he delivers through a character named Bob, so adorably smitten with Mary Ellen that he pledges to survive his own little corner of horrors. Eventually, Dauberman hits an unexpectedly sweet note with the accumulation of various female coming-of-age stories.

But once it hits its stride, it’s a moderately entertaining ride, particularly, in the final 30 minutes when the picture transforms into an extended funhouse attraction.

As in previous Conjuring films, the best scares are the subtle ones that build in layers of increasing dread, while the CGI terrors are bigger, but not necessarily better. My favorite scare is a seemingly innocent object that you realize is going to be bad news later on and when it pays off, you’re not sure if you should laugh or hide. This clear-cut plotting is welcome in a franchise where I'm still wondering why anyone thought this doll was a totally normal thing to make or own in the first place. And remember how in Cabin in the Woods, the basement was also full of haunted things just waiting to be activated? Thanks to Annabelle's beacon status, this film is like that if the characters had managed to activate all of them at once.
