Movie Review: "Annabelle Comes Home" is a mildly entertaining entry in "The Conjuring" universe News Events Opinion More

Jake is no more interesting a character than he was last time around, but he does have utility here as a tough father figure for his kids to struggle to live up to. Zoe Saldaña’s Neytiri feels like the legacy character with the least to do, mostly advocating for her kids to a distracted Jake. The leaders of the Metkayina tribe, played by Cliff Curtis and Kate Winslet, are cut from a very similar cloth to Jake and Neytiri and often end up feeling redundant as a result.

While babysitting Judy Warren, Mary Ellen and her friend unwittingly release the Annabelle doll from its confines in the Warren's artifact room, along with several other cursed objects, which then proceed to attack the girls. Despite the title, the film isn't really about Annabelle; as she's only one of several cursed objects that have to be overcome. Still, the writers come up with some rather creative and frightening demonic spirits. Yet it holds back on the blood and violence, not really earning its R rating.

In this case, it’s the babysitter’s friend Daniela , who has her reasons for wanting to contact the world beyond. There goes protection from all sorts of hellish miscellany that wants to eat your soul. While previous Annabelle movies have stumbled over complicated, murky plots about a demonic entity whose motivations are mostly unclear—aside from its unending quest to collect human souls—Annabelle Comes Home is simple. The house itself is haunted because it's full of haunted stuff, intentionally placed there by adults who investigate hauntings.

One bad film and one good film, which brings us to the third film in the series, Annabelle Comes Home. Directed by Gary Dauberman, in his directorial debut, with a story by Dauberman and James Wan. It is the seventh entry in the Conjuring Universe and stars Mckenna Grace, Madison Iseman, and Katie Sarife. Both Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson also show up to reprise their roles as Lorraine and Ed Warren.

Furthermore, there’s a tenderness here that we don’t see a lot of in movies of this nature. Case in point, a cute little crush between Mary and Bob that doesn’t end in the prerequisite booty call you might be expecting. It’s refreshing to see puppy love displayed in such a tender and sweet-natured way. If you’re already thinking that this sounds like overkill, you are right.

Adding to the aforementioned likability factor are the performances. Farmiga and Wilson only have glorified cameos here but they bring their typical sense of warmth to the table in a very short amount of screen time. This young girl is not only dealing with a potential gift handed down from her mother but she also has the added pressure of being that classmate with the weird parents. Iseman is charming, and her natural screen presence goes a long way to keep Mary from being a one-note babysitter. As a teen dealing with loss, an emotional Daniela desperately wants to believe there’s something out there, and through her intense ordeal with Mary and Judy, she may just get an answer.

Oddly enough, perhaps what works best in this film is the likability factor. Again, there’s an innocence here that’s most welcome and unexpected. Unlike a lot of contemporary horror films, “Annabelle Comes Home” doesn’t rely upon relentless gore and shock tactics to prove its worth. In fact, I’ve seen PG-13 rated horror movies that were more extreme.

If only the half-baked story could also meet our expectations, or at least match the logic of the previous two “Annabelle” films. Annabelle Comes Home is gifted with what might be the ultimate haunted house set-up. Chuck in the well-worn ‘baby babysitter’ trope, and Annabelle Comes Home should be a Friday night funhouse blast. It wasn’t particularly scary, and there wasn’t anything particularly memorable about the characters.

Regular Conjuringverse visitors know that the antique doll resides deep in the Warrens’ basement, a virtual museum of cursed totems and creepy-as-fuck playthings. Casual moviegoers can guess that someone will eventually go down into that basement, ignore the sign that demands no one open the case under any circumstances and rile up the bad-juju inventory. So when the Warrens go out of town for a job and leave their daughter Judy under the care of a teenage neighbor named Mary Ellen , it’s only a matter of time before some curious underage character messes with things they shouldn’t.

When she learns what the Warrens do for a living, she weasels her way into the house under the guise of helping Judy celebrate her birthday, but she has other plans. She makes her way into the locked room and, as the trailer emphasizes, touches everything — including Annabelle.

Well-done scares are paired with tension-breaking levity, and we even see a few new monsters (and/or sequel fodder). Annabelle Comes Home should serve as a not-so-serious summer horror flick for anyone looking to laugh a little and jump a lot. Though we spend some brief time in the forests of the first film, the vast majority of The Way of Water takes place in the territory of the seafaring Metkayina tribe, and the vibrant underwater ecosystem is an even more dreamlike palette for Cameron to work with. But when the time comes to blow up all that tranquility in favor of blockbuster action, it should come as little surprise that Cameron delivers the goods. Even the most chaotic action sequences are readable, thrillingly paced, and above all, impossible to take your eye away from.

In this installment by debut director Gary Dauberman , we pick up exactly where the opening scene of “The Conjuring” left off. A totally normal kid considering the circumstances—who amongst us would have turned out okay if we were raised in a haunted house by demonologist parents constantly making the headlines? —Judy gets bullied in school all the same, having trouble even recruiting enough friends to come to her birthday celebration.
